Olean, in Cattaraugus
County, is the educational and commercial center of an extended rural area which
is characterized by a poverty rate that is one-third higher than the national
average. It is also within a few miles of the Salamanca Seneca Reservation.
The women served in Olean are rural, Seneca or both. They face a number of barriers
including isolation, poverty and lack of transportation.
