New York State Self Sufficiency StandardThe Self-Sufficiency Standard for New York State, issued in June 2010 by the NYS Self Sufficiency Standard Steering Committee, details how much it costs for families across the state of NY to meet their basic needs, without any public or private supports. The report was prepared by Dr. Diana Pearce of the University of Washington. Myrna F. Young, Everywoman's Executive Director/CEO, served on the NYS Self Sufficiency Standard Steering Committee. The Self-Sufficiency Standard for New York State charts the actual costs of living and working in the state. It measures income adequacy, or how much income a family needs to pay for housing, food, childcare, healthcare, transportation and taxes—if they do not receive any help from relatives, friends or the government. The standard takes into account the number and ages of children in the household, and where the family lives. The standard shows, for instance, that for a single mother in Buffalo with one pre-schooler and one school-age child to meet her most basic expenses, she needs an income of at least $22.43 an hour—or $47,362 annually. The conclusion? The Self-Sufficiency Standard for 2010 shows that for most workers across the state, earnings well above the official Federal Poverty Level (FPL) are nevertheless far below what is needed to meet families' basic needs. |
